Q. What kind of physical condition do I need to be in to study Tai Chi?

A. You should always consult your doctor or other healthcare provider
before starting any new exercise program. However, because of the slow,
gentle nature of Tai Chi practice it is suitable for just about anyone.
Your strength, balance, and flexibility will develop over time. You
should feel relaxed after practicing. While some positions may seem
awkward until you get used to them, nothing should be painful or
stressful.

Q. What do you wear in class? Do I need to buy some kind of uniform?

A. We do not wear uniforms or special clothing. You will be standing
and moving, so wear shoes that are comfortable and loose-fitting
clothing such as you might walk around in for a couple hours.

Q. Is this the thing that looks like everyone is moving in slow motion? Why do you do that?

A. Yes. Tai Chi is usally practiced slowly. The slow pace allows
attention to detail throughout the range of movement which is required
for learning to move efficiently.

Q. Why do you practice outdoors? Don't people stare at you?
-
A. Chi is an energy that circulates not just within us, but through
us and the environment. Practicing outdoors facilitates the exchange of
energy. People sometimes stop and watch, usually for just a few
minutes. Occasionally they will ask questions. When you are
concentrating on your practice, it's easy not to notice people around
you and we certainly shouldn't feel self-conscious about improving
ourselves.
